50 (meeting Sidurgu)

No wonder they try to accuse us of heresy. We're the only ones bold enough to stand up to the Church, and in a fair swordfight they can't oppose us. No one knew that better than poor Fray...

Then you knew him too? I returned to Ishgard as fast as I could when I heard about the impending trial by combat. But I was too late. It's a damned disgrace...it wasn't Halone, but these bastards who offed him, I've no doubt about it.

Fray and I studied under the same master. We've crossed blades a few times and confronted the dark sides of our hearts together.

Say, how do you know him? Did you meet him here in Ishgard, before he was dragged to the Tribunal?

That...is certainly an unusual story. But not the first time that I've heard something like that. The dark power enters our hearts in surprising ways.

A dark knight finds himself in a constant struggle against himself. He dedicates himself to protecting the weak, yet a part of him yearns for freedom.

Hm, then at least Fray's death was somehow useful. He was your teacher. Because it was his memories that were saved in his crystal and that made you into a dark knight.

If he passed on his knowledge to you, maybe you can help me.

But I don't want to impose, and here isn't the place for private conversations. If, and only if, you'd like to use your skills as a dark knight to do something good, then visit me in Ishgard in the Forgotten Knight. I have something to tell you that you should definitely know.

in English sid gives you a more general "this is what it means to be a dark knight" speech, citing the first of the knights etc. it seems a little more specific here

very quick translation: we're a thorn in the eye of the church, because we're the only ones who stand up to them, the only ones who question their authority. because we don't want to see the daily abuse of the poor. up until now it hasn't come to an open confrontation. but with fray's judgement they gave a clear sign: no one goes against the church without punishment. it's only a matter of time until we're next on the list.

sid also gives a bit more detail about his past: I was just a boy when I fled with my parents from the garlean empire. they were seeking protection and found...death. no child should have to watch as his parents are murdered. au ra were a rare sight in ishgard. ishgardians feared everything that was unknown to them. from our horns and scales, they thought us in league with the dragons. that cost my parents their lives. my blood would have stained the snow red too, if not for the knight clad in black who appeared and stood before me- my master. and how did the church punish the brutal murderer who slayed my parents because of their scales? he got an award and was promoted! murderer! when I think of his hideous face, MY BLOOD BOILS.

the words from their master:

Pain, tears and sorrow- they are the burden on the shoulders of the dark knight.
